BlackArts Racing’s 2017 Asian Formula Renault and FIA China F4 Champion Charles Leong will pilot the Oloi Powered by BlackArts Racing car for this weekend’s final round of the Asian F3 Winter Series.
The Macanese driver transitioned from karts to formula cars in 2016, and joined BlackArts Racing to take both the 2017 Asian Formula Renault Championship and 2017 FIA China F4 championships at only 15 years old.
Leong, who gave BAR its third of four AFR driver titles, will pilot the BlackArts Racing powered by Oloi F3 car in the final event of the Asian F3 Winter Series. The championship is run as a regional F3 FIA series and designed as a stepping stone to International F3, which will become a Formula One support series in 2019.
Leong said: “I am excited to be rejoining BAR for this weekend’s Asian F3 finale. We work well together and of course that was a big factor for 2017 when I became the first driver in Asia to win two formula championships in a single season.”
The Macanese driver replaces Brit Jamie Caroline in the Oloi Powered by BAR car for this weekend, after Caroline had to unexpectedly return to England for personal reasons.
BAR’s team principal Bill O’Brien said: “We are thrilled to have Charles back in the fold. He’s always been an impressive driver but also, we have been pleased to have been part of his career development. We wish him the best of luck this weekend.”
Oloi, Inc. was recently announced as the primary team sponsor for BlackArts Racing in 2019. Both the Asian F3 and Asia Formula Renault Championships will feature BlackArts Racing powered by Oloi race cars in the Asian and China-based championships.
